Write Anything - Fiction Friday: Pick your favorite movie monster (vampire, werewolf, etc) and give it a makeover. (write for 5 minutes.)

Lincoln, knew what was expected: run around during full moons, howling and biting humans. She was a werewolf. She was born a werewolf ... unlike some werewolves who were bitten by werewolves during a full moon.... and became werewolves at the summer solstice. (She was so tired of dodging the myths surrounding her.) But that is a story for another day. Lincoln had a more pressing problem ... she was a werewolf who did not like eating meat. Lincoln liked broccoli, apples, cheese... ...CHOCOLATE and rich BUTTERCREAM FROSTING! YUM!! Just thinking about it, started a longing .... a craving, you could say! But werewolves were not a welcome sight at the local bakery. Bakers and their customers, were too afraid of being bitten. If only! For years Lincoln had endured peer pressure, family pressure: You Are a Werewolf! You Must Eat Meat! Shooed out the door as a young werewolf, with the admonition - GO - Bite Someone! EAT!

Lincoln's best friend Thunder, while a definite fan of meat -- was the only one who never pressured Lincoln to eat anything she did not like. Even meat! Live and let live, was Thunder's motto. (Not a motto usually ascribed most people, let alone werewolves.) From time-to-time, Thunder even managed to procure for Lincoln, delicious pieces of pilfered dark chocolates and slices of devil's food cake smothered in buttercream frosting.

Thunder understood that her friend was not made from the same mold as other werewolves. What caused the difference, did not matter .... all that mattered was Lincoln was her friend. If she did not like eating meat... no big deal. Just meant more meat for Thunder when Lincoln was around! All good!

Puppy thoughts -- I met a Shiba Inu tonight. can't remember her name, but wow, she's CUTE! I'm going to see her next week, Wednesday night! I think I'm in love! awwwwww......

She's 2 weeks younger than me.... black and dark brown fur, with a little bit of white .... ahhhh....

AND she loves to play, just like I do!

Remembering the early days .... just beginning as a Puppy-Assistance-Dog-In-Training

Time for a quick nap! Mom took lots of pics of me when I was just a little kid! Wonder who ate the face off my tiger? Sure wasn't me!!!
Yep, this is it! A clicker! I just KNOW this gadget means good things are coming my way!!

Early in my life in Maryland.... coming out of an appointment Mom had .... I hung out, looked cute, learning about the sound a clicker makes, when I do something, like "sit" or "lay down" or even "look" at Mom ..... Mom "clicks" and gives me a treat.
This is Erin, she's the puppy coordinator at Fidos For Freedom, Inc., I'm the puppy she's holding upside down. Guess what, she's also "testing" me ... yep, I pass! Flying Colors!! :-)
Me, my first week here, exploring the puppy training room, (also called the agility room at Fidos For Freedom). I'm just 8 weeks old here.

Early days ... reminiscing ... big word for a pup! (means I'm remembering how it all started...)
Here are some pics of my first outings, and some of the first people I met as I was out and about in Maryland... Laurel, College Park, Silver Spring ..... I meet adults, children, other animals....
I saw the movie !UP! I've gone to Seibel's .... YUM! (altho, what am I saying? I don't eat there! But mom and her friends do!) She says they have yummy ice cream ... her fav flavors are chocolate chip and peppermint. My favorite flavor is ....hmmm.... BISON! ha-ha! Mom saw some bison a couple of weeks ago... but that's another story ... hang on ... we will get to it ... but first... some of the earliest pics of my life in Maryland...

Vacation Home!

Just little ol' me, vacationing with Joanne and Rick, while Mom goes to see WOLVES. ArrroooOOO! That's how wolves sound when they howl. Can you hear them? Mom says she heard them, and even howled along. Way to go Mom! AaaaRRrrrooOOOOO~ I can howl too!

I had a blast at Joanne's and Rick's house! Pretty yard ... lots of room to run, flowers to smell.
I loved zooming around the yard, zoom-zooming around the house! Played like I was a racehorse, galloping FAST! I heard somebody say, when I run, that sometimes I run just like a bunny rabbit! Hmmmm..... Bunny Rabbit? I CHASE bunny rabbit if I see it first!

Whadda ya think? I think purple looks good on me! That's why I've got a purple collar!

This is one terrific place to be on vacation!

Thoughts on Playing Ball

Hi Everyone!!! ARF!! Mom was reading this newspaper article that was posted on that book of faces ... oops, Mom says it's called "facebook." :-) Anyway, here is the link:

It is an article by a writer named Richard Cohen, the following are the final two paragraphs of the article:

"In due course, Vick will play again. His entry has already been smoothed by the touching concern of Jackson and others, not to mention a bevy of sportswriters who seem to have programmed their computers to type out "paid his debt to society" with a single keystroke. Some of them have pointed out that they are dog lovers. Touching. But we have yet to hear from the dogs themselves.

When Vick takes the field, I for one will imagine the thrashing of pacifist puppies as they are drowned or twisting in the wind as they are hanged. And throughout the land every kid will know -- if they do not already -- that what matters most is not that Vick has paid his debt to society or is remorseful, but that he could still throw the ball. Maybe an athlete can't quite get away with murder, but drowning dogs is a different matter." (-Richard Cohen, August 10, 2009).

Yep, that's the last part of the article ... lots of big words, but when Mom read that sentence:
"We have yet to hear from the dogs themselves," I thought, okay -- I am dog, here's how I feel about this:

This is SCARY! This man throws balls and drowns or hangs dogs?!!? Hey! There is something very very wrong with this picture! ARF! ARF! ARF! ARF!

I am a dog. I chase balls that Mom throws. I even bring them back to her. (sometimes I swerve around her, at the last minute, running very very FAST! with a look of glee in my eyes!! But, heck, I'm a puppy, and I'm PLAYIN'!) And Mom's laughing!! We are PLAYING together!

I have met a GAZILLION KIDS!!! (since living in Maryland.) I don't want any of them thinking that what matters most is that a man can throw a weirdly shaped ball, rather than how very bad it is that he hurt lots and lots of dogs, very badly ... OW-OW-OW-OW !!! (Just thinking about it, makes my chest hurt.)

I'm sticking close to MOM! She will protect me. I know that with all my heart. Actually, I would bet my life on it!! Mom would stand STRONG between me and anything that would ever threaten to HURT ME!!! I know I'm safe. But, I am sad and upset about the dogs that were drowned and hung .... I did not know them, but I have lots of dogs who are my friends, and I would not want any of them ever hung or drowned because they did not want to fight. Fighting is soooo STUPID anyway! I've never heard of humans who made dogs fight each other, and if the dogs wouldn't fight, then, those dogs would be killed. That's horrible. I know I don't want to fight any other dog. (I also know Mom would NEVER put me in that situation. That is so sad, that those dogs did not have a Mom like I have. They did not have anybody to protect them.)

Hey, kids, those of you I've met, and all of you I've not met yet... and any kids (and adults who are reading my blog) ... dogs being forced to fight each other is wrong. Any man or woman who does that, should not be allowed to be a public role model.

I want all of you to know ... sometimes there are adults who ask kids to do bad things, yes, sometimes, there are some adults who might ask a kid to not tell the truth, or to "beat up anyone who calls you a name," .... not every adult is smart or kind.... so, to all KIDS, you need to remember, anytime an adult asks you to do something that does not feel okay, RUN LIKE THE WIND and find some other adult and tell him or her what is happening. Go tell a teacher! Go tell your Sunday School teacher, if you go to church. Go tell the lady or man at the library, when you are checking out books. Tell the school nurse, or your doctor. Tell your friends' moms or dads .... but TELL SOMEONE. And sometimes, kids, even your friends might ask you to do something that will hurt another kid or even hurt an animal.... here's what you can tell them: Raynor told me to say: "NO WAY! Mean isn't Green. Being mean isn't cool. Being nice, playing, telling your friends how much you like them and how smart they are .... now that's COOL!

And, you adults out there .... stay away from any adult who does mean things to animals and/or people. If you know it's happening, step in and stop it. (I know that a lot of you adults, at least the ones I've met, already do that. I am meeting really wonderful people everyday!! They play with me, love me, and take care of their dogs and cats and kids!! whew!)

I do not like this man who throws funny shaped balls (Mom says they are called footballs, and the man's name is Michael Vick). I want every kid and adult who reads this to know, he is not a good man. He is not someone to look up to, NO MATTER how far or fast he can throw a ball.

He hurt his own dogs. Because they would not fight. They did not have a choice, and fighting is not what they wanted to do ... they were being asked to fight their friends.

So, if you like football, and see this Michael Vick playing, please, change the channel. Tell your mom and dad that you do not want to watch Michael Vick play football. He plays for some Eagles in a place called Philadelphia. (yes, Mom is helping me with all these names and big words.) I'm still just a puppy.

But, even a puppy knows when something is bad, and drowning and hanging dogs, because they won't fight, is a very bad thing to do.

Okay... now, everyone of you, who has a dog ... quit reading my blog, and go hug your dog, and then, really, Play Ball!

Greetings! Up late for a youngster. Been missing everybody! Mom will post some pics tomorrow, but I just wanted to say: HELLO!! You all won't believe just how MUCH I've grown!

Every day .... I am 17 weeks and 3 days old now.

Been feeling blechy .... under the weather ... where did that phrase come from anyway? I'm a puppy, and what I've been feeling is blechy. (I am sometimes UNDER a chair, or UNDER a table, I can even get UNDER the BED! Surprise! ...and I am often UNDER Mom's feet!)

But, I'm on the mend. Lots of people are helping me to feel better. Mom's taking care of me, and the people at Fidos For Freedom are helping Mom take care of me. (Thank you Fidos!!)

I did something really COOL: you'll never ever in a million dog years guess what, so I'll tell you:
I went to ACUPUNCTURE! My acupuncturist is Noreen Javornik! She's really kind. Noreen saw right away, that I was NOT feeling good last week, and she stuck some very very thin needles in me, (I hardly felt them at all), and afterwards, I felt SO VERY MUCH BETTER! Thank you Noreen. Acupuncture gets a 4 paw star rating from me. Let me just say, from one pup to another, if you ever don't feel good, go and get some Acupuncture!! (If you live near Laurel and Columbia, MD, definitely go see Noreen!! She's the BEST!!)

Noreen has 2 dogs of her own: (well, her dogs have their person -- and her dogs names are Cassie and Bailey Sue.) Cassie is the cutest little Corgi!! She did NOT like it that I bit her ear! oops! I forgot myself for a minute, when I met her ... see, I'm teething, and I just HAVE to put things in my mouth. But Cassie's ear, NOT the right thing to chew on. I'm not certain she's forgiven me. I'm sorry Cassie. Cassie let me borrow her Wolf-size Nylabone to chew on during acupuncture. That was yummy! Thanks Cassie.

Bailey Sue, I have not met her muzzle to muzzle. But, next post, I will tell you more about her. Noreen is a great mom for Cassie and Bailey Sue. Cassie is a Therapy Dog with Fidos For Freedom, Inc. That's the same place, where I'm growing up to be a Hearing Assistance Dog. Fidos For Freedom, helps us all to have good lives and important things to do, whether we are Therapy Dogs, or Puppy Assistance Dogs In Training!

Well, I'm pretty sleepy, it's been a really big day.

Now, I know -- photos are what you all love to see, so, Mom will get her camera turned on and plugged in, and post some pictures of me, and what we've been up to. It's hard to write and take pictures when you don't feel good.

But, it won't be long, before I'm feeling great and doing all my puppy adventures.

This is the backyard at home, and Mom SAYS this is a DOG, but I'm not certain I believe her!! This is Teddy! She's a 13 year old Pomeranian! I don't think she's too certain about me either! Ha-Ha! Only 8 weeks old, and already, compared to Teddy, I'm BIG!

And Away WE GO!! Mom says we're heading home!

Out of the crate, and checking out the car! Maryland smells.... !!!! Car smells. Guess this is what home's gonna smell like soon! Wow, I was so little!! Grin!!! When Mom gets to the newest pics of me, you will all see just how BIG I HAVE GROWN!!

Yep! You guessed it!! Me, Raynor!! Here I am, all of 8 weeks old!! Just arrived from my very first airplane trip! Safe and sound!

Hi Everyone!! Now that I'm getting older, (14 weeks old now!), I figured I'd better start catching everyone up on the backstory of my first couple of weeks in Maryland. This is Savion. Mom was telling him I was coming to stay for awhile! He's 9 years old, and was already living with 6 dogs!! The news really woke Savion right up!! Savion is one of my best kitty friends now. We play, then curl up together, groom each other, then take a nap.

Raynor here: I sure have missed seeing everyone at Fidos For Freedom. But I will be back soon. :-)

Hi there! Guess what? I got my nails trimmed tonight! (and at the beginning, I was pretty certain, this was not the thing for me!) But then, Mom pulled out the magic pill pockets! Chicken! Yum! Gave me a little piece, then trimmed a nail. Gave me another little piece and trimmed another nail. I forgot all about not liking to have my feet messed with. It wasn't so bad at all! The Chicken Pill Pocket pieces, YUMMY! The nail clippers trimming my nails, not so much of a problem. (Having my nails trimmed is not one of my favorite things, and previous times, I've tried out my whirling dervish routine on Mom... she's pretty patient... I'm learning she can wait out almost anything.) Lucky for me, 'cause being a puppy, is a lot like being a baby, and even though I'm cute as all get out, I know I try Mom's patience on occasion... but that's what I've gotta do to Learn! (thanks Mom, for being patient. Mom also has to be really careful cutting my nails, as they are solid black, and it's really hard to trim them without cutting the quick. So far, she's not hit the quick yet! whew!)

Pictures will be coming .... camera battery's being charged. (hint to Mom, get a backup battery.... then you will be able to use your camera...) Lots of people want to SEE me!! I'm growing every day.

In Memory Of .... All The Assistance Dogs Who Have Crossed The Rainbow Bridge

This is the 95th day I've been alive. For me today is one of thoughtfulness and even sadness. Someone I did not know well, but the couple of times I met her, I thought she was beautiful, and her spirit seemed happy.... she was another assistance dog in training .... about a year ahead of me... sigh ... this is a sad thing to say, because yesterday, due to unforeseen health complications, she died.

I want to honor her life. She has touched the hearts of lots of people. Beginning with her breeder, who is a wonderful person, who donated her to Fidos For Freedom, moving on to her Puppy Raisers, then her Trainers, sometimes living with her Vacation Home Providers, she was a dog of light and joy.

Her name is Allie.

Usually service dogs live long and happy lives. Getting to do work they love for their special person. It's really a deep bond of love and service. Along with working, we get lots of time to play. All of our people make sure we know how much we are appreciated, and we enjoy getting to help them live lives they could not otherwise live, without our assistance. Our jobs as service dogs allow individuals with a disability to live more independently, more securely, knowing that we are right there ..... to stand and brace for a transfer, for a mobility-impaired individual. To tug off their shoes and socks and shirts, for people whose arms and/or legs don't work really well. To let our person who cannot hear, or who doesn't hear very well, know that someone is calling their name, or that an alarm has gone off, we take her or him to the source of the sound, as well as pick up anything she or he may have dropped, and not heard fall to the floor. There's lots more we do.

Along with all of the skilled tasks we are trained to do, one of the most important ones, (which doesn't require training on our parts, we seem to do this naturally), is to unconditionally love the person we are matched with. It's a deep, heart-to-heart connection. We are with our person in almost every single moment of her or his life. Loving them, no matter how they are feeling, no matter what the disability, it's love. Truly. Our hearts and spirits are connected to our person, we know when she feels great and when she doesn't. We know when he goes to sleep, and when he wakes up, scared, not remembering, for a minute, that he can't just jump out of bed, because his legs don't work. We go for help, bring the emergency phone, or call 911, or alert another person in the house, when it's an emergency.

But, most of all, all of us, know how very much we are loved.

All of us, give all of our love, to the people who love us. In the end, it's really all about love.

Dear Allie, and all the assistance dogs who have crossed the rainbow bridge .... please know, that today, I want to honor you. I have the greatest honor and respect for your lives and your service. As assistance dogs, we give a lot, yes, and we are all given So Much by all the people in our lives. I pledge to you, Allie, that I will bring all of my heart and spirit into everything that I do. I pledge to be the best hearing assistance dog I can be. I am already loving the people who are raising me, training me, helping me learn what I will need to know. I grieve your passing.

I promise to continue to carry the love forward. Your life, while short, was strong. Your heart loved and was loved by all.

With deepest regards to you, Allie, and my heart holds out its paws to everyone feeling the pain of your death.

Play well, Allie, on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. I know you continue to love and be loved. I know that you are comforted and strong. I miss you. Everyone who knew you misses you.

A Puppy's Spot

This is my Puppy Raiser's mom's Assistant Puppy Raiser, Virgie, and one of my new dog friends I'm living with -- her name is Penny, and she's a Border Collie mix, who looks an awful lot like a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. Penny is a Therapy Dog with FFF. (Fidos For Freedom.)

Virgie is the sign language interpreter at FFF, working on the training floor, interpreting what is being said by the trainer calling the class, so that the people who don't hear well & have adult hearing assistance dogs, can understand what the trainer is saying. Here I Am!! Napping! Important for all the growing I've gotta do!

Raynor, an 8 week old, Norwegian Buhund puppy, arrives safe and sound, at BWI airport in Baltimore, MD on June 10, 2009. His journey to becoming a Hearing Assistance Dog with Fidos For Freedom is just beginning. Raynor and his Puppy Raiser, are happy to be meeting each other! Thank you Fidos For Freedom!!
